This past weekend (30/31 of August) in the Premier League -
- Chelsea were involved in a "game of the season" contender, with a 6-3 victory against Everton at Goodison Park.
- Manchester United were held to a goal-less draw away from home against Burnley, with £60million pound signing di Maria playing 70 minutes in his United debut
- Southampton and Swansea both won comfortably against West Ham and West Brom (respectively)
- Stoke provided the shock of the week with a narrow 1-0 away victory against defending champions Man City, thanks to a solo effort from new signing Mame Biram Diouf
- Palace's new loanee signing Wilfried Zaha scored a stoppage-time equaliser to ensure Newcastle did not get all 3 points in an end-to-end 3-3 draw
- Arsenal supporters showed their anger at a lack of a world-class striker, as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Premier League newboys Leicester
- QPR beat Sunderland, Aston Villa beat Hull and Liverpool embarrassed Tottenham at White Hart Lane
So what are my thoughts on this weekend's action? Well, it's good that Swansea and Chelsea have a 100% win record in the 2014-15 campaign; they are the only two teams who have won all of their 3 games. Hopefully I didn't just jinx that.
Chelsea striker Diego Costa looks like an absolute beast in attack for The Blues. His strength, power and clinical eye for goal could help the side win the Premier League title for the first time since 2009-10. Just what they needed.
Arsenal supporters need patience, it seems as if they think they are bound to finish 4th again this season just because their striking options are not the best. That's true, they are not the best - but at the end of the day it's the whole team who need to gel together if they are to challenge for trophies.
It's fairly obvious to see that Yaya Sanogo is not yet fully ready for first-team football in the Premier League. At 21, he's got raw talent that needs improving before he can attempt to make a mark in the Arsenal team.
Angel di Maria is a very good signing for United but not what they need at the current point in time. At age 26, he's in the peak form of his life and will be eager to set up his new team-mates as best as he can, but if you look at the team carefully enough you will begin to realise as much as I already have that they need defensive cover - not more attacking prowess.
Can Liverpool challenge for the title again this season? Probably too early to say, but at the moment they are not quite there yet.
The sale of striker Luis Suárez is obviously a big deal at Anfield, and it will take some time to replace him for sure - but, Rodgers is a very smart manager who knows how to get the best out of his players and he'll do his best to try and juggle their Premier League challenge with the club's first season back in the UEFA Champions League.
Last but not least - it's time for an international break! Yes, the season's just begun and yes, people will not embrace it with open arms but ah well. First international showing for many since the World Cup in Brazil, as the European and South American qualifiers for their individual tournaments get underway.
